Bible Week – Day 5 – Technology and the Bible

Daily Passage

Then God said, “And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small.” So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, blessed them, and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals.” (Genesis 1:26-28 GNB)

Teaching

In the creation story, we see that we were created in God the Creator’s image to be creators ourselves (e.g. children, environmental care). Of course, not everything we create is good for us, but that does not deny the good creative instinct.

This applies to many things, but we’ll focus here on technology. The Canadian Bible Society and many others have been hard at work helping make the Bible available in electronic formats so that you can access the Bible anywhere you have your device. There are some drawbacks in user experience, e.g. a flashing notification distracting you while trying to focus. Despite those drawbacks, many of these applications are dramatically helping increase Bible engagement. They offer significant advantages such as being reminded to read, having it always with you, and having reading plans in place that help with ideas for where to start.

Examination

Do you prefer to read the Bible on an electronic device or in print? What do you think are the trade-offs between each reading format?

React

If you are having trouble with the Bible in physical formats, try out some electronic formats to find something that works better for you.
