Jason Caldwell

by Peter Fleck

Calgary businessman Jason Caldwell credits his faith “in the God of the Holy Bible” with giving him the peace he needed following the tragic death of his 17-year-old twin sons in an after-hours accident at Canada Olympic Park in February 2016.

Speaking at the Calgary Leadership Prayer Breakfast in late October, Caldwell recounted how a number of youths at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel let their “zest for life and adventure” get the better of them.

Meeting at a restaurant after youth group, the teenagers decided to trespass the grounds in the middle of the night and take their toboggans down the steep, icy run built for the luge and bobsled races at 1988 Winter Olympics. What they didn’t realize is that further down, the track had been barricaded and chained off.

TORONTO – (Canadian Christian News Service) – Employees of the Canadian Bible Society (CBS) will join with Canadians from coast-to-coast November 11 in marking Remembrance Day, to honour the memory of members of the Canadian Forces who have died in the line of duty. For more than a century, CBS has maintained an important relationship with Canada’s service personnel, providing our military men and women with more than a million copies (estimated) of the Christian Scriptures throughout that time.

It was at the beginning of the First World War in 1914, that CBS representatives first approached the federal government, offering to provide free New Testaments (with Psalms and Proverbs) to every man in the Expeditionary Forces. The Militia Department accepted the Canadian Bible Society’s offer, and so began the production of a special edition, khaki-bound book, bearing the Canadian Coat of Arms. The inside inscription included a quote from the biblical book of Joshua: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 NIV

From that time, the special edition New Testaments were printed in several iterations over the years, with variations in size, cover, and additional content.

Stanley had never held a Bible in his hands, let alone read one. So when he joined the Scripture Union Sports Camp this summer and was handed a sports New Testament created for Scripture Union by the Canadian Bible Society, he looked at it – confused – and asked his coach, “Is this a dictionary?”

Like Stanley, many children who go through these sports camps have never seen or owned a Bible. The primary reason is that their family doesn’t go to church or doesn’t own a Bible.

As for me, I was introduced to the Bible by my parents at an early age, so it is hard for me to imagine what it’s like to grow up in a home where God’s Word is not read and talked about. I may not have understood completely the importance of the Bible when I was very young, but, looking back, those years of reading Bible stories and memorizing Christian Scriptures have developed in me the appreciation for God’s Word and the role it played – and continues to play – in my life. It definitely helped me navigate through the treacherous teenage years, gave me wisdom for those life-changing decisions, and provided a guide for day-to-day situations. Most importantly, the Bible led me to Jesus, my Saviour, Friend, and Anchor in life.

The Canadian Bible Society has for over 110 years shown its commitment and passion to make the Bible available in the first language of every person in Canada and around the world. Our commitment is more than just putting that Bible into a person’s hand, through sales or free distribution. It goes further. It means being committed to that person understanding this book and realizing that it is not like any other book in the world. This book’s message is life-giving.

TORONTO – (Canadian Christian News Service) – As summer fades into fall in Canada, and students once again fill classrooms from coast-to-coast, the Canadian Bible Society (CBS) is reaching out to equip some of them with God’s Word.

In partnership with International Student Ministries Canada—a Christian charitable organization whose vision is to empower international students to impact the world through Jesus Christ—CBS will be distributing over 1,000 Bibles, New Testaments and testimonies (of previous international students) to young adults newly arrived in Canada.

International Student Ministries Canada (ISMC) focuses on reaching international students during their time in this country, providing friendship and helping them adjust to Canadian culture and their new learning context.

“We really see how these gifts [of the Scriptures] speak to them,” says Stephen Scott of International Student Ministries Canada. “As they embrace the truth, it transforms their lives.”

“The Canadian Bible Society exists to translate, publish, and distribute the Christian Scriptures,” says Jonathan Dent “and to promote and encourage the use of the Bible, here in Canada and around the world. In partnership with ISMC, we are able to put God’s Word into the hands of young people who will take it back to their home countries, their families, or wherever God calls them.”

TORONTO – (Canadian Christian News Service) –This summer, thousands of Canadian children and youth will attend summer camps from coast to coast. Many of them will receive a free copy of the Adventure for Life Bible, designed especially for them.

Each summer, the Canadian Bible Society (CBS) extends its engagement with Canadian children and youth who attend Christian camps. “The response to the Adventure for Life Bible is overwhelmingly positive,” says Rev. Dr. Jonathan Dent, National Director of the Canadian Bible Society. “Camp staff recognize the value of a Bible geared specifically to the camp experience, and young campers are thrilled to receive their own free Bible,” he says. “The Adventure for Life Bible includes the entire Scriptures in an easy-to-read New Living Translation as well as sections on how to read the Bible, how to pray, what the Bible says about forgiveness, great Bible chapters, where to find specific topics or stories, and what to read in specific circumstances.”

Since its publication in 2015, more than 31,000 copies of the Adventure for Life (Child) Bible – created especially for children who attend Canadian Christian camps – were distributed to campers across Canada. An additional 7,800+ copies of the youth version of the Bible were also distributed.
