How to Get into the Habit of Daily Bible Reading

There are many Bible study tools available, yet many Christians struggle to read the Bible on a daily basis. Personal devotion to God through Scripture reading is a blessing you will want to experience. The Bible tells us of the importance of spending time in the Word.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8

There has never been a better time to deepen your faith, grow in Christ and pick up new habits! Follow these steps and you can develop the habit of reading the Bible every day:

  1. Start small.
Take small steps first. You have to walk before you can run. While one Bible verse a day may be too little, one full chapter might be intimidating at first.Try kicking off your daily devotions with Psalm 119 – a composition of 22 groups of verses (called stanzas), reading one group per day. This will give you a daily sequence for more than 3 weeks!
  2. As you build up, find a plan to support you.
You started small, and now you have achieved your first goal! Motivated by that sense of accomplishment, try to reinforce your habit even further. Look for and try out Bible reading resources. Check out the Daily Bible Reading page for FREE resources – where you can download the Daily Manna or the 2020 Daily Bible Reading Guide, or sign up for Daily Bible Reading emails to have Bible readings delivered to your inbox every day!
  3. If/when you slip, get back on track quickly.
If you miss a day, don’t worry. It happens. Just try again and pick up where you left off or if you find that the pace was too fast, go back to Step 1 and start small again, then work your way up.Remind yourself that you are trying to form this habit because you want to grow closer to Jesus and deepen your faith through the Living Word. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
  4. Encourage as you have been encouraged.
The written Word that you read every day is so powerful. Watch as it brings comfort, hope, wisdom, guidance, peace, and encouragement to your life. You will enjoy the refreshing of your soul and will, “be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 4:17). And may you also help others learn this essential habit! You can start by sharing this blog post with your church, friends, and family.
