Former CBS Executive Director Wallis Arthur Sherwin passes away
TORONTO, March 26, 2018 – Former Executive Director of the Canadian Bible Society, Wallis (Wally) Arthur Sherwin, passed away peacefully at his home on March 18, 2018.
Wally grew up in Edmonton, Alberta where he attended high school at Camrose Lutheran College. Following high school, he spent a year at Foothills College in Mountain View, California, then the University of Alberta where he majored in Accounting and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
In 1966, Wally and his young family moved to Vancouver where he joined Arthur Andersen & Co., an accounting, tax and business consulting firm. In 1973, he transferred to the Toronto office and became partner three years later. After several years, Wally left AA & Co. in 1982 to work with companies in financial difficulty and finally joined Paperboard Industries Corp. as Vice President of Finance in 1985.
In 1991, he joined the Canadian Bible Society to serve as Director of Finance and later, as Executive Director. In addition to his Canadian responsibilities, Wally served on a number of United Bible Societies committees, which led to extensive regular travels around the world. A former CBS colleague fondly describes him: “Wally had a wonderful laugh that would pop up every so often, which always made his presence known. He always made it known of his love for God. God was always included in all his decision making at the Bible Society. He would almost daily quote verses in the Bible for us to refer to.”
Wally is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol, and children, Kevin and Darryl Sherwin (Glenn Stalker); sisters, Winnifred (John McQueeny) and Wendy (Louis Seta); brother-in-law, Bill Marshall (Heather); and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 11 am, at Sheridan Park Alliance Church, 2440 Fifth Line West, Mississauga ON.
