Rebecca’s* story: No turning back

I work in the bookstore of the Canadian Bible Society. We sell many Bibles in different languages. On any given day, I may meet people from 6 to 8 different countries – many are converts from different religions. Whenever they visit our store, we do our best to encourage them in their Christian walk. I am originally from Pakistan – a predominantly Muslim country – and grew up in a Christian family that has a Hindu background. In 1985, a big crusade came to our city (in those days crusades were allowed openly) and I went with my family. A young Lebanese Christian shared the gospel and I gave my heart to Jesus that evening. Since then there was no turning back. I am so thankful to be His child.

During the British rule, many churches were built in Pakistan. However, in the past 20 years, due to the rise of extremism, Christian persecution in Pakistan has been at its peak. People still worship in churches but under heavy armed guards because of suicide bombings inside the churches. The church I grew up in experienced a suicide bombing and many people died a few years back. I am so grateful that in Canada, my home for the past 31 years, I have the freedom to exercise my faith and introduce others to Jesus.

I love my job because it provides me with opportunities to speak with people about Jesus. There are a lot of seekers who come to the bookstore – looking for a Bible – and there are also those who are going through different challenges in their lives. It is so amazing how the Lord uses the bookstore staff to pray and uplift them. This excitement travels home with me and my husband. We pray for all the ones who ask for specific prayers.

My favourite verse is Romans 8.28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” It has been tried and tested in my life and in our life as a family. No matter what happens, in the end, the Lord brings it all together for the good of His children. We must fix our eyes on Him and not on circumstances.
