Top Reasons People Don’t Study the Bible
Have you ever resolved to read the Bible more? Maybe you are determined to read some verses every day or read the whole book, each and every word.
But then, we falter. Fall out of the daily rhythm. And then give up entirely.
At the Canadian Bible Society we’re in the people-reading-the-Bible business, so we asked ourselves, “What makes it so difficult to engage with the Bible?“ The Bible Course addresses many of these difficulties, which is why we are excited to launch The Bible Course in Canada.
Top 4 Challenges
1. I don’t know where to start.
We’ve all been there. A good Bible study program can point you towards a good place to start. And yes, the Bible does need interpretation, but with the right coaching it becomes much easier to navigate. The Bible Course gives you a road map and adds the group experience—people who are on the same path and timetable as you.
2. The Bible is too confusing.
Yes, the Bible can be confusing. We all need help from time to time. The Bible Course is built on the one unique storyline that flows through the Scriptures. It’s exciting and provides clarity when you can see the story that ties the different books, characters and events together.
3. I’m not smart enough.
No one is. Even people with advanced training need help. Don’t worry – the good news is that God wants you to hear Him speak through the Bible, and He’s ready to help. When we read the Bible with an open heart, the Holy Spirit guides us. The Bible reveals “the things of the Spirit of God”- things from God that we can’t figure out on our own. The Bible Course also provides resources that help us delve deeper, and again, the group experience will enrich your understanding.
4. The Bible is boring.
There are ‘challenging’ parts – and it is a very long book. However, the overall story is quite exciting – especially when you see how all of the books, characters and events ties together – and even more so when we are able to connect it to our own stories and our daily lives. Here are two questions you can ask yourself:
1) “What?” – What did this chapter sound like to the people who first heard it? What meaning did it have for them?
2) “Now what?” – Now, what do these words mean to me in my life today?
Thankfully a little effort and the right guidance can help us overcome these obstacles.
This is where The Bible Course steps in. This eight-week course can help you grow in your understanding of the Scriptures. For small groups and larger gatherings, it can be used anywhere – homes, workplaces, prisons or even online.

If you want to be part of a group of people that are exploring the Bible together ask a mature Christian or a church leader to host a small group using The Bible Course. Share this blog post with them!
Knowing how to connect all the parts of the Bible makes it powerful in your life. May God bless you as you hear Him speak!
P.S. God’s Word is still hard to find in many places in the world – it’s financially inaccessible and in some places having a Bible is risky and can provoke harassment and even persecution for people. That is why translating and distributing the Bible is a long-lasting priority for the Canadian Bible Society. You can also be part of this mission of providing Bibles to Christians facing hardships around the World here.
