word@work Issue 1 | 2026: The gift of a Bible brings hope and joy in Ukraine

“Today I received the two greatest treasures in life – bread and the Bible. Thank you sincerely for this incredible gift.”

Halyna, a widowed woman, counts her incredible blessings

Since the war began in Ukraine, church leaders have seen a deep and growing hunger for God’s Word. Recently, the Bible Society was invited by Pastor Andriy to distribute Bibles at his church in Zhytomyr, just west of Kyiv. On this Friday evening, about 200 people gathered, many of them pensioners, grieving relatives of fallen soldiers, and those who had lost their homes.

Each one eagerly accepted the precious gift of a Bible along with a loaf of bread. But the response of an 82-year-old widowed woman, named Halyna, was particularly touching. When Pastor Andriy handed her a copy of the New Testament, she quietly whispered, “Today I received the two greatest treasures in life – bread and the Bible. Thank you sincerely for this incredible gift.”

After the short service had ended, Halyna shared, “I was born during a war, and I will probably die during a war. But I’m not sad. I know I’m not alone. The Lord Himself cares for me. He sent you here to support and encourage me. Thank you for everything!”
