word@work Issue 1 | 2026: Your gift of a Bible strengthens children like Gifty

“…when I read it, I feel He is talking to me.
I am not afraid anymore.”

—Gifty

On a recent visit to Ziope School in Ghana, the Bible Society team was greeted by enthusiastic children who were eager to receive gifts of Bibles. But they noticed that one girl, whose name was Gifty, sat apart, silent and withdrawn from her classmates.

Team members were concerned and arranged to visit Gifty’s home after school. What they discovered was heartbreaking: her single mother was doing her best, but with little income, life was filled with hunger, lack, and despair.

HOWEVER, THAT DAY MARKED THE BEGINNING OF CHANGE IN GIFTY’S LIFE.

Along with basic aid for her family, Gifty received her very first Bible. And that Bible has become her most treasured possession.

“Before I had a Bible, I felt like God was far away from me,” she says. “But now, when I read it, I feel He is talking to me. I am not afraid anymore.”

Owning a Bible gave Gifty strength to pray, courage to face her challenges, and hope for a better future. For the first time, she realized that even though her earthly father abandoned her, her heavenly Father would never leave her.

Gifty is no longer the shy, broken girl sitting apart in her village school. She is now a radiant, faith-filled young girl with a dream of becoming a teacher so she can inspire and support children like herself.
