Scripture literacy empowers believers in rural China
Fear gripped Zhang anytime she had to leave her family’s small farm. Her parents became disabled when she was very young. They could not afford to send her or her sisters to school. As a result, Zhang grew up illiterate—a limitation that followed her into adulthood, leaving her unable to read street signs, bus routes, or directions, and making even routine tasks like navigating busy streets confusing and nearly impossible.
She enjoyed attending church, but Zhang could only listen to the pastor’s message. Though she had obtained a Bible of her own, she could not read Scripture, no matter how hard she tried.
Zhang’s story is not unique among believers living in rural China.
Through your support, Canadian Bible Society is working with local churches to provide Scripture literacy classes. This outreach empowers participants with literacy skills so that they will be able to read the Bible for themselves, growing in their faith in Christ.
Zhang shares, “Now when I read the Bible, I can understand the meaning of some words, and I understand the Bible a little better than before. The more I read it, the more I want to read it!”
Learning how to read and write has not only built Zhang’s confidence and increased her frequency in reading the Bible—it has also given her the confidence to share God’s Word with others, something she takes great delight in doing.
