He has written many books based around the topic of homiletics and is known for his focus on the poetry of faith and the centrality of the gospel. In this episode, Paul talks with CBS Ambassador, Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling about how the gospel is “God’s saving action,” and how it can be applied to every part of our daily lives. 

Rev. Dr. Paul Scott Wilson

The Rev. Dr. Paul Scott Wilson is Professor Emeritus of Homiletics at Emmanuel College in the University of Toronto, where he taught from 1981 until 2019. He is known for his focus on the poetry of faith and the centrality of the gospel. A son of the manse, he is ordained in the United Church of Canada and has served several churches.

A past president of the Academy of Homiletics, he has written many books including: The Four Pages of the Sermon (2018); Preaching as Poetry (2014); Setting Words on Fire: Putting God at the Center of the Sermon (2008); The Practice of Preaching (2007); Broken Words: Reflections on the Craft of Preaching (2004); Preaching and Homiletical Theory (2004); and God Sense: Reading the Bible for Preaching (2001). He has edited fifteen books, won two Book of the Year awards, and has supervised many doctoral students. He received the United Church Davidson Award for Teaching Excellence in 2004 and in 2013 received a major research award from the Louisville Institute. He lectures, teaches, and preaches widely throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Canada. He is married to Deanna who is also ordained, and they have three grown children and two grandchildren.

Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling

Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling was the Senior Minister of Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church in Toronto, one of Canada’s largest United Church congregations and was responsible for leadership and administration at Timothy Eaton from 1998 until his more recent retirement. Overseeing staff, providing visionary leadership, acting as the public representative of over 1,500 members and managing a dynamic and ever-evolving ministry to the city of Toronto and beyond.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Law from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, a Master of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a Doctor of Ministry in preaching from Acadia Divinity College, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. In 2008, Wycliffe College, Toronto, recognized his contribution to preaching with an honorary Doctor of Divinity.

Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling is now the Ambassador for the Canadian Bible Society building relationships with churches, academic institutions, and individuals across Canada.
